Northside Journal: One Nation Under God

As a Junior High School teacher back in the `70’s, I had the privilege to teach American History and Louisiana History.  It is good to look back at our beginning and try to understand how unorganized colonies of the British Empire could declare their independence and win it.  Current historians are trying to rewrite our history in order to take God out of the miracle of our victory for freedom.  But if we simply read our Declaration of Independence and quotes from our founding fathers, it is very easy to see that they knew God was their source of strength and their only hope of victory.  Look at this powerful thought given to us in the Declaration: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  They understood that only a Creator could give us “unalienable rights” simply because they knew man would not do it.  Within the heart of men of power is a desire to conquer and subdue - only a God who is all powerful would dare to give us freedom.  Look again at the source of their freedom in this statement:  “We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world… solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent states… And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our Sacred Honor.”  These men who formed our United States knew the “Supreme Judge of the world” would give them “protection” in gaining their freedom.


Fifty-six men signed this document; they were educated, influential and wealthy. They risked everything, and gave all to bring the new nation to reality.  Five were captured, tortured and killed by the British, twelve had their homes ransacked, occupied or burned, two lost their sons in the army, one had a son captured, and nine died fighting in the army


The Bible declares, “Unless the Lord builds the house they labor in vain who build it.”( Psalm 127:1)  Those founding fathers knew and believed God’s Word.  They knew if this nation would stand it would only be because God willed it.   Benjamin Franklin declared, “I have lived, Sir, a long time (81yrs.) and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth that God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?  We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord Build the house, they labor in van that build it.  I firmly believe this…” 


Hear the words of our first president, George Washington: “No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States.  Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency…” He believed that it was the duty of this nation to not only acknowledge God, but to honor and obey Him.  “Whereas, it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor…” He goes on to call the nation to thankfulness to Almighty God.


There was another President of our United States who understood the nature of God and country, Abraham Lincoln: “It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”


These men did not have an instructional book on building a democracy; there were no democracies to immolate.  What they did have for instruction was God’s Word, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) Read these statements from six former presidents:

1.  John Quincy Adams:  “The first and almost the only Book deserving of universal attention is the Bible.”

2.  Abraham Lincoln:  “All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated through His Book; but for the Book,

     we could not know right from wrong.  All the things desirable to man are contained in it.”

3.  Woodrow Wilson: “… The Bible… is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God

     and spiritual nature and deed of men.  It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and


4.  Andrew Jackson: “Go to the Scriptures… the joyful promises it contains will be balsam to all your troubles.”

5.  Calvin Coolidge: “The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it

     would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country.”

6.  Franklin Pierce: "Let not the foundation of hope rest upon man's wisdom. It must be felt that there is no national 

     security but in the nation's humbly acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling providence."


Karl Marx, father of communism understood that this idea of democracy could only come from faith in God.  Here is his belief:  The democratic conception of man is false because it is Christian. The democratic conception holds that man has a value as a sovereign being. This is the illusion, the dream, the postulate of Christianity."


Okay, now we see that our beginning as a nation was built on God and His Holy Word, so what has happened to that type of faith?  What has turned our nation away from the teachings of that word?  Ungodly men dressed in black robes have torn the fabric of our beliefs as a nation.  Men who are unelected and cannot be unseated have legislated from the bench of the Supreme Court of the United States.  See their weapons used to tear that fabric:



1. In 1962 the Supreme Court of the United States prohibited the saying of this simple non-denominational prayer in public schools   “Almighty God, we acknowledge our independence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers, and our country.”

2.  1963 the Supreme Court banned Bible Teachings in public Schools.

3.  Again In 1963,  abortion was legalized resulting in 40 Million babies murdered

4.  In 1980 the Supreme Court ordered public schools to remove the Ten Commandments from students’ view.

The Results… since 1962 teen pregnancies are up 400%; gonorrhea among children 10 to 14 years is up 400%+; sexual activity among those15 years old is up almost 1,000%; teen suicide is up 300%; violent crime is up 660%; divorce is up 120%; homosexuality has been given protected status when scripture calls it is an abomination, Leviticus 20:13 “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.  They shall surely put to death.”


These decisions are a long way from where the Supreme Court once stood:  Supreme Court Decision, 1892 - Church Of The Holy Trinity  vs. United States: “Our Laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of The Redeemer of Mankind.  It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian…”


So what is the answer?  It is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If My people, who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”  We need to pray for forgiveness for straying as a nation and seek God’s face for direction and guidance in our own lives and those of our elected officials.  We need to speak up!  When we are silent, the voices of the few immoral, godless,  selfish people who believe only in themselves will be the only ones heard.  And, we need to vote!  If you do not exercise your God given right to choose godly leaders, then once again, the few vocal immoral and self-centered people will choose the leaders to lead us in their direction.
